B-009 - Weddell Seal Population Dynamics

PI: Dr. Jay Rotella

Location: Erebus Bay, Ross Sea, Antarctica
Dates: 2012-12-03 to 2013-04-09

Project Summary

The population dynamics and the influence of environmental factors on Weddell Seal colonies of Erebus Bay in the Ross Sea have been studied by researchers since 1968. Monitoring seal masses throughout the summer months can also give researchers insight on the annual variation in marine food resources. This in turn provides insight on how long-term variations in the marine environments can affect the Weddell seal colonies' population dynamics. (Written by Marianne Okal, UNAVCO)
