O-269 - Antarctic Summer Sea Ice System

PI: Dr. Stephen Ackley
Project Lead: Stephen Ackley
Funding Source: NSF-PLR 0839053
Location: Amundsen Sea
Dates: 2010-11-15 to 2011-01-25

Project Summary

Using field measurements, data collected from installed remote buoys and satellite imagery, we will characterize the relationships between surface properties of sea ice and ice thickness, processes of ice thickness change by growth and melt and determine the impact of the sea ice cover on heat exchange and salt flux between the atmosphere and ocean. The region of interest is the Amundsen Sea pack ice, which will be traversed by the icebreaker Oden in Dec 2010. (Taken from UNAVCO PSR)
