U-047 - Methane Cycling in Northern Peatlands

PI: Dr. Lee Slater
Project Lead: Lee Slater
Funding Source: NSF/EAR 1045084
Location: Maine
Dates: 2011-06-01 to 2011-07-31

Project Summary

The goal of the project is to quantify the spatiotemporal variability in methane emissions from northern peatlands. The group has been working for a number of years on quantifying methane production and emissions from northern wetlands. Peatlands are well recognized as an important reservoir in the global carbon cycle, accounting for about 33% of the global soil carbon pool and influencing CO2 and CH4 concentrations in the atmosphere. Observation of the production and emission of carbon gasses from peatlands has resulted in much recent speculation regarding the potential role of peatlands in regulating global climate change.
