Project: TLS Applications at Rocky Mountain College (U-058)
- PI: Dr. Emily Ward
- Project Lead: Emily Ward
- Funding Source: University and state funding
Description
This project is part of a multi-year project monitoring rock fall events and identifying rock fall hazards along the Rimrocks in Billings, Montana. The project provides students with experience in collecting and analyzing TLS data. The data are integrated into a suite of courses within our Geology and Geography programs at Rocky Mountain College. These data will be used in conjunction with the GETSI teaching materials that I use in my Geomechanics and Geomorphology courses.
Objective
- Train students in collection and analysis of TLS data
- Use these data to provide a 3D view of the fractures within the bedrock hillslope. These data provide the basis for new lab activities and problem sets in the Geomechanics, Geomorphology, GIS and Remote Sensing courses.
- Use the TLS data in conjunction with measurements of rock movement and fracture development atop the Rimrocks to inform future monitoring and data collection for hazard assessment and mitigation as part of student research projects.
